Aegean Link Cup - a huge success

Cesme Marina hosted Turkish and Greek yachtsmen for the first Aegean Link Cup on the 15th and 16th October.
The event was the concept of Kemal Saatcioglu, General Manager at Cesme. He met with the yacht clubs of the neighbouring Greek Islands in June to discuss arranging a race event and so the Aegean Link Cup was born! And the first one was deemed a great success with nearly thirty boats and two hundred yachtsmen taking part.
A pilot for a series of similar races to be held at Cesme in the coming months, including the Winter and New Year’s Cups, highlighted how the marina is the perfect location to host such an occasion. Those that took part in the event commented on how impressed they were with the marina, the level of service and the event organisation and confirmed they would be taking part in future events.
Although conditions tested competitors with winds up to 32 knots, the race committee managed to run two races, with a 14 mile course on day one 15 mile course on day two. As with all successful sailing events, there was of course a good party, with a BBQ Bonito and DJ on Saturday night. There was a prize giving ceremony held after racing on the Sunday.
General Manager, Kemal Saatcioglu said: “We would like to thank all Turkish and Greek boat owners who participated in our first Aegean Link Cup which all started in June with a meeting of the Greek and Turkish yacht clubs. Our friends from the Nautical Club of Samos and Aegean Athletic Club of Chios showed their belief in the future of this event and are sorry that the Nautical Club of Lesvos were unable to attend. We would also like to thank the Aegean Offshore Racing Club for their valuable support. As Cesme Marina and ICYC, we are very much looking forward to organising and hosting a calendar of sailing events and welcoming more visitors to take part and enjoy the marina.”
The “New Years’ Cup” will begin on the last weekend of November, with further races in December, a total of six races in three weekends. Applications are already being received.
