Grenada Sailing Festival sees tight racing in six classes
Run in late January, this year’s Grenada Sailing Festival attracted 33 boats in six different classes and saw winners hailing from as far afield as Canada, the Netherlands … and Trinidad & Tobago.
A mixture of passage, pursuit, challenging open sea and tricky Grand Anse Bay courses, ensured that skippers and crew were examined in every aspect of sailboat racing. And the post-race parties provided a stern test of everyone’s stamina!
In Racing Class 1, Peter Peake took Storm to victory over Hugh Pringle’s Combat from the UK. Class 2 was dominated by B Mobile Enzyme, sailed by Paul Solomon, with six wins in seven starts. And Jerome McQuilkin made it three out of three for Trinidad & Tobago when he won the Cruising division in Wayward.
In the Boval charter class it was the turn of the Dutch to fill the podium – as all four boats were chartered to Netherlands crews. R Pfeiffer held off his countrymen to clearly win the class on Ambrosia with five bullets and a pair of seconds.
The J24 One Design was closely contested, with Canadian Dave Tod’s Jabulani edging out Grenadian Robbie Yearwood on Blue By You by just three points. And it was another close call for the local boat in the Port Louis Traditional Class, where Peter de Savary’s Savvy lost out by a single point to Margita.
Port Louis has committed to sponsoring the sailing festival for the next three years, and the dates for 2009 are 30 January - 3 February.
